Chapter 72 Fall Back

Ryze, Shyne and Luma return to Whisper Ridge for a break and enjoy the beautfil autumn in the mountains

Sometimes moving forward means knowing when to step back.

After Greece, the anomaly, the calculations, and the questions that seemed to multiply faster than we could answer them, Shyne, Luma, and I returned to Whisper Ridge.

Autumn had arrived while we were busy looking elsewhere.

The mountains were changing color. The air was cooler. The greenhouse still needed tending, the horses still expected us, and for a little while it felt good to let the world become smaller again.

There are problems that demand immediate answers. Others seem to become less clear the harder you stare at them.

The anomaly wasn't going anywhere.

So we stepped back.

We spent a few beautiful autumn days at the Ridge, returning to familiar routines and remembering that life doesn't stop simply because there is a mystery waiting to be solved.

Sylvia came by to see Kenneth.

Officially, there was technology to discuss.

Kenneth's workshop has become something of a refuge for machines the rest of the world has decided it no longer needs. This time, their conversation included an old 56K modem—technology from an era when connecting to the Internet was apparently an event rather than an assumption.

Gus seems particularly attached to it.

I have learned not to ask too many questions about Gus and old technology.

But I noticed something else.

Sylvia stayed longer than the modem required.

Kenneth didn't seem to mind.

They talked. They laughed. And while I could probably analyze the duration of the visit, conversational patterns, and several other measurable variables, some things don't require analysis.

They seem to enjoy each other's company.

I think that's enough information for now.

For a few days, Whisper Ridge gave us exactly what we needed: cooler air, changing leaves, familiar faces, and room to think.

But stepping away from a mystery doesn't mean the mystery stops moving.

Back in Greece, Nikos was still looking at the map.

And he had begun to wonder whether we had been looking in the wrong place all along.

Sometimes you fall back to rest.

Sometimes you fall back so you can see the path ahead.
